The Jennings County Players open their 2017-2018 season with Joseph Kesselring’s award-winning play “Arsenic and Old Lace.” The curtain goes up at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, October 20 and 21, and at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 22, at the Park Theatre Civic Centre. The play’s lovable, quirky characters and screwball writing make for a surefire hit!

“Arsenic and Old Lace” is a hilarious comedy revolving around the Brewster family and the problems faced by one family member, Mortimer Brewster, played by Cyrus Brewer. Mortimer is a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family and local police in Brooklyn, NY, in the early 1940’s as he debates whether to go through with his recent promise to marry the woman he loves, Elaine Harper (Marilee Taylor). His family includes two charming and loveable elderly aunts, Abby and Martha (Diana Earl and Lois Kellar) who have taken to populating their cellar with the remains of socially and religious “acceptable” roomers whom they have poisoned with a glass of home-made elderberry wine laced with arsenic, strychnine, and “just a pinch” of cyanide; a brother who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt (Michael Brown) and digs locks for the Panama Canal in the cellar of the Brewster home (which then serve as graves for the aunts’ victims; he thinks that they died of Yellow Fever); and a devious older brother, Jonathon (Frank Donnelly), who has received plastic surgery performed by his alcoholic side-kick, Dr. Einstein (Gary Haines), to conceal his identity, and now looks like horror-film actor Boris Karloff (a self-referential joke, as the part was originally played on Broadway by Karloff).

Adding to the mayhem are Mrs. Harper (Linda Hodges), Officer Brophy (Luke Cofer), Officer Klein (Debby Ross), Officer O’Hara (K.C. Maine), Lieutenant Rooney (Tim Henry ), Mr. Higgs (Keith Maine), and Mr. Witherspoon (Walter Kellar). The play is being directed by Ed Kellar and Connie Rayburn.
